Sad truth!

Today I tried a new approach with child beggars, when they asked for money, I offered them candy and chocolate. None of them took my offer. Why would a kid refuse to take some free sweets even when they know they are not getting anything better? Later, my sister enlightened me: next time, offer cigarettes, weed, cocaine... and they would sadly take it!

  1. There may be many reasons. They may under pressure to collect money. And even if they prefer cigarettes, they are still children--victims.

  2. Of course they are victims. I am not saying or implying they aren't. I do feel, for some reason, a personal responsibility to do something, but I always fail. There are a few novels I read when a kid that are at the origin of this feeling, including الصبي الأعرج, le petit chose, Mon bel Oranger... When they prefer cigarettes over chocolate, that means it is us who have got to wake up not them!

  3. As-Sabiyya Al-Araj really influenced me. Do you know that schmuck was a Phalanges founder and had early ties with Israel? Ugly is our history.

  4. He did mention his love for Pierre Gemayel in one of his books, I guess Hasad al-'Omr, but I remember I used to love him a lot when I was a kid, made me read most of his books!!! Maybe I did have phalangist tendencies as a kid, although I don't know where I got this from, most of my family and relatives were more like SSNP!
